On May 1 and 2, New Voices will join with Simon & Schuster Publishing and Quail Ridge Books to bring noted children’s author, Sharon Draper, to the Triangle area. Draper, whose recent novel Out of My Mind, chronicles the story of a New Voices-like child, eleven year old Melody who is unable to speak or walk. The novel chronicles Melody’s frustrations and successes as she is given the opportunity to communicate.
New Voices has also arranged for Draper, a two time Coretta Scott King award winning author, to visit Martin Middle School in Wake County and Loews Grove Elementary school in Durham County as well as William Peace University. She will also appear on NC Bookwatch on UNC TV. In addition, New Voices has teamed with Quail Ridge Books for a book signing event and an opportunity for the general public to hear Draper’s remarks about Out of My Mind. Don’t miss it at Quail Ridge Books in Shopping Center at 7:30pm on May 1st.
Associated with Sharon Draper’s book signing visit, New Voices is launching a special promotion in partnership with Quail Ridge Books. For each $50 contribution to its book fund, New Voices will place 3 copies of Out of My Mind in the library of an area public school. To participate in placing Out of My Mind in area schools, visit www.NewVoicesNC.org. All donations are tax exempt.
New Voices continues to raise awareness through viewings of “Certain Proof: A Question of Worth”, an award-winning documentary produced by Footpath Pictures in cooperation with New Voices. The film portrays how difficult but necessary it is for families and teachers to find ways to unleash the potential of children who cannot speak or use their hands to write. Merck Corporation (April 24), and the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at UNC-Chapel Hill (May 4) have made arrangements with New Voices to have the documentary shown to their faculty, staff, and employees this spring.
